Stairways of San Francisco

San Francisco is built on 42 hills and has 670 stairways, which generally provide pedestrian access between adjoining parallel streets which are set at different heights from each other.

Today we explored a few of them.

There really is a stairway under all this vegetation, and there’s Pat at the top, having just battled up it.

No stairway – just a track this time.

All this stair walking is very good for the calf muscles.

  1. How very lovely, Jan. Glad your calf muscles are improving. (Sydney has some old 19 century stairways which are lovely too, but somehow I think they are less ubiquitous.
