The 3,000 Year Old Olive Tree, Crete.

Monday, 30th September, 2019.

Phil took Roy and me to see this massive olive tree in Crete, which is estimated to be about 3,000 years old.  The trunk is hollow, and has been used for various purposes over the years, including as a dog kennel.
From the info beside the tree:
"Among the Olive-trees of Crete, exist some which can be classified as 'Monumental".  This Olive-tree has been classified as Monumental by the Association of Olive Municipalities of Crete due to the special shape of its trunk."
A branch of this tree was cut at a special ceremony and used in the wreath for the winner of the Men's Marathon at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Near the tree was an Olive Museum which contained various tools which have been used in olive cultivation over the centuries, and also charts with information about olive oil consumption in Crete.

Phil and Lynn have six olive trees, and take their olives to a local mill to be crushed into oil each year, obtaining in the order of 60 litres per year.  So Phil should be able to celebrate his 80th, 90th, 100th etc no worries.
