Hỏa Lò Prison, later sarcastically known to American prisoners of war as the "Hanoi Hilton", was a prison built by French colonists at the end of the 19th century and used for political prisoners and later by North Viet Nam for prisoners of war during the American War. 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain spent parts of his five and a half years as a POW there.
Most of the prison was demolished in the mid-1990s, with just a small section being retained as a museum.
As barbed wire was expensive, broken glass was used to deter escape over the walls.
Built in 1998, the actual Hanoi Hilton is carefully named the "Hilton Ha Noi Opera" Hotel.
