Tuesday, 23rd April, 2013.

The mainland China segment of our tour concluded with a farewell dinner at a specialised Peking Duck restaurant.

Here are Pat, Tatiana and Yuriy checking out the free drinks.

Ducks are specially bred to become Peking Ducks and then specially cooked.  Then the beautifully glazed ducks are brought to the table to be meticulously carved into 108 pieces – you’ve guessed it – a specially lucky number.

When the carved duck arrives at the table, the waiter demonstrates how to roll it into a pancake and add plum sauce.

Ahwen responds to a vote of thanks from the group delivered very beautifully by John.  John’s speech included how well organised the tour was, to show us so much of China in a short time, the high standard of the touring, the accommodation and the food, and he expressed his appreciation of Ahwen’s sharing so much of his life experience with us, and looking after us so well.

Drinks were included with this dinner, including a kind of Chinese rice vodka.  Yuriy demonstrated the Russian way to drink this, by placing the vodka on your elbow, then flipping it up to your mouth without spilling any.  (With the evidence of a rather damp jumper, I can confirm that this is not easy).

The challenge was accepted.

Here’s to a great tour!

This was the end of our mainland China tour.  While eight of us, including Pat and I, went on to Hong Kong, the rest of our group returned home.  What a wonderful tour it had been.
