Milford Sound – Te Anau road: The Homer Tunnel

IMG_7811

While work began on the single lane Homer Tunnel in 1935, it was interrupted by WW2, and the tunnel was not completed until 1953.

Conditions were harsh for the workers and their families in the construction camp, which received no direct sunlight from May until September.  Melting snow could flow into the tunnel work face at 10,000 gallons per hour, and endless avalanches killed three of the workmen.

The only hardship we had to face was having to wait 15 minutes on our homeward journey for a green light – luckily we sailed straight in on our way there, when we were rushing to catch our boat.

Driven on 15th April 2012.
