Milford Sound: Lost in the rain forest

IMG_8034

On our way back to the carpark from the wharf, we took a walk up to a lookout which gave yet another striking view over Milford Sound.

The track was surrounded by magnificently luxuriant ferns:

Another man on the track told us that this was kidney fern, and that he had never seen it growing so prolifically before.

In the beginning, the track was very well marked, but beyond the lookout, after a short distance of gravel, it became much narrower.  Maybe we weren’t meant to go any further.

Anyway, after a while it became so steep and muddy that we decided to retreat.  We must have taken a wrong turning somewhere, because suddenly we found ourselves on the very steep, slippery hillside unable to find our way back to the track.  How embarrassing!  For about ten minutes we were quite lost, which gave me new admiration for explorers.  Finally, Pat spotted a way back, and we slid thankfully back down to the track, after our mini adventure.

Lost on 14th April 2012.
