Doha, Qatar: Souq Waqif 9.05.2010
Souq Waqif was an old souq, so the government decided to knock it down and build a new souq that looked like an old souq (from http://www.qatarvisitor.com/index.php).
The electric lights and fans are a concession to the 21st century.
There has been a souq on the site for centuries, but in modern times it became very scruffy, so in 2004 the souq was rebuilt according to old plans, maps and recollections. Souq Waqif means “Standing Market” as it was built on the banks of a tidal wadi, and the merchants had to stand all day.
In Dan’s apartment were also living Rick, who works with Dan, and his wife Jane. On this day, Jane was kindly taking us on a tour of Doha. Here are Pat and Jane disappearing around the corner, while I’m trailing along behind, photographing everything in sight.
Souq colour.
For your shisha smoking pleasure.
Just browsing.
Carpet cave.
Pots.
Something sparkly.
A small sword perhaps? I didn’t notice whether the fierce animal head had a body attached.
Take your pick.
“Are you coming?” (I kept getting into trouble for lagging behind.) The wheelbarrows are used by elderly men who will wheel your purchases around for you.
Jan and Jane relaxing in a restaurant with a Belgian name and Arabian decor, which served Italian food and played American jazz music.
