Doha Islamic Centre 9.05.2010

From one of the major streets in Souq Waqif can be glimpsed the spiral minaret of the Kassem Darwish Fakhroo Islamic Centre.  A recent construction, it has become in a few years one of Doha's most famous landmarks. This is not a traditional Qatari mosque but a replica of the Great Mosque of Al-Mutawwakil in Samarra in Iraq, which is more than 1,000 years old.

Beneath the tower is a multi-purpose facility including lecture theatres, offices, a mosque and department stores; the building is also home of the Qatar Centre for the Presentation of Islam, which includes explaining Islam to non Muslim foreigners.  There is a permanent exhibition detailing the basics of Islam,  and several teachers, speaking different languages, ready to answer all your questions.

The English speaking teacher was already engaged when we visited, so we slipped through without being converted.  The exhibition was beautifully presented.
