Chisa didn’t know anyone in Nagasaki, but enquired through an English teachers’ association to which she belonged, to see if anyone would be willing to act as our guide in Nagasaki.
Junko’s sister responded to Chisa’s request by asking Junko if she would act as our guide – even though Junko lived a good hour outside Nagasaki.
Junko was a very friendly and helpful girl. She helped us make a rather complicated rail booking, then took us to the Nagasaki Peace Park, a Dutch village museum and the spectacular Glover Garden. We were very grateful for her help.
Junko was a keen touring cyclist. She belonged to a cycling group who offered accommodation in their homes to other touring cyclists – I think it was called something like “Warm Showers”. Also staying at the Nagasaki Akari Hostel were a very fit Swiss couple who were cycling around Japan with their two-and-a-half year old little boy Jeremy, and we were chatting to them when Junko met us at the hostel.
It turned out that this couple had booked to stay at Junko’s house in two days time. When Junko saw them, she asked if they had booked to stay with Junko at an address outside Nagasaki on a certain date. Looking surprised, they said yes, and Junko said “That’s me!” What a co-incidence!
We heard from Junko later, and they had had an enjoyable visit.
