We decided to come home from the island on a JR ferry and train, so we could use our JR rail passes. There were literally thousands of people on the island, as it was a school holiday, but the large JR ferries were leaving every ten minutes, so we accomplished the first section of our mission successfully (well, fairly successfully, as Frances had not brought her JR pass, but the fare wasn’t much.)
Looking around for a train, we spotted a carriage that said “Hiroshima Station” so leapt onto it. Oh dear, we’ve done it again. The “train” turned out to be a streetcar, so this time we all had to pay, but once again, not too much.
As the streetcar made its way to the station, we spotted the A-Bomb Dome, so hopped off there, as we knew we could walk back to the ryokan from there.
It was getting dark and beginning to rain as we left the streetcar, and the A-Bomb Dome ruin looked extremely grim.
Photo showing how the dome was the only building left standing.
From a plaque near the dome.
