Kyoto: Tea ceremony

Monday, 8th April, 2014.

When Carol asked Hosoki what this shaving-brush like object in the kitchen cabinet at JEE was, Hosoki replied it was used in a tea ceremony, and immediately set one up.

We were each given a small bowl and invited to add a spoonful of green tea powder, then Hosoki added a small amount of hot water.

Using the brush, we were required to stir the powder and hot water very briskly to a certain pattern until the mixture went frothy.  We weren’t terribly good at it, and Hosoki had to come around and stir everyone’s properly.

The tea was supposed to end up looking like this.  We were each given three little lumps of something sweet that you ate with it.

Thank you Hosoki – very special!

Carol and Frances later went out and bought a little brush each.
