Shànghǎi: East Nanjing Road

Sunday, 14th April,  2013.
After our visit to Pǔdōng, we took the Metro under the Huángpǔ River to East Nanjing Road, and walked back to the Bund.

The floral wall of the Bund was well lit, as were the buildings in Pǔdōng, now on the other side of the river.  (Picture taken on phone.)

The Peace Hotel on the Bund is making the most of its green copper pyramid, possibly to highlight the fact that it is one metre taller than its neighbouring building, the Bank of China.
In 1992 the Peace Hotel was listed as one of the famous hotels of the world by the World Hotel Association.  (Picture taken on phone.)

East Nanjing Road was where the first department stores in China were opened in the 1920s, and where the modern era – with its new products and the promise of a radically different lifestyle – was ushered in” (Lonely Planet).  It is still “a glowing forest of neon at night”.

Closer to People’s Square, East Nanjing Road becomes a pedestrian mall.  It was wonderful to see the people gathering at night, making their own fun.  There were large groups of people, mainly middle-aged women, doing something similar to line dancing, which we had seen in Cambodia.  There were groups of people taking turns at karaoke, to portable CD players.  There were also lots of people spontaneously singing or playing instruments, such as this sax duo, so there was plenty to see.
I found this rather lovely description of activities in People’s Square, in broken English.  I love how it ends with “is real, is ordinary.”
“Weekend, when clear weather, the square airborne will dance in the air the multi-colored kite, adult, the child, will be old people in that careful line is bustling about for the hand, perhaps will forward, perhaps will withdraw, but will maintain throughout rises 45 degrees. Sits in Shitai the people, perhaps the static onlooking enjoys, perhaps is blowing the soap bubble, perhaps between the friend is laughing and playing, the heart-to-heart talk, perhaps happiness between lover's, also perhaps family happiness is warm, is like this is relaxed, is enjoyable, like this is real, is ordinary.”  http://www.topchinatravel.com/china-attractions/shanghai-people-square.htm
