We left our boat in Chóngqìng, a major manufacturing centre and transportation hub in Southwest China.
Chóngqìng does not receive good press from Lonely Planet:
…… the weather’s awful. This is the City of Fog; it rains much of the time, is as polluted as almost anywhere in China and is a furnace come midsummer.
We had sampled a version of its signature dish Chóngqìng hotpot on the boat, so once we had hauled ourselves and our hand luggage across the pontoon and up the stairs that the porters had run up several hours earlier with four suitcases each, we piled into a bus and were whisked straight off to the airport.
