From the temple of Wat Phnom it was a short walk to the Night Markets of the French Quarter. These markets are patronised by mainly local people.
Firstly, we came across durian fruit. Perhaps a new variety has been bred which doesn’t smell as overpowering as the ones we came across in Malaysia about ten years ago, when the hotels had a “no durian” sign. I couldn’t smell these at all, and I have even seen durian occasionally in our shops at home.
Raw fish.
Fish (left) and meat (right), being chopped up with a very serious cleaver.
Vegetables and fish.
This is one image of these markets which will stay with me for a long time. Yes, these are skinned whole frogs!
Ducks roasting on a spit.
This is the other image which will stay with me from these markets, when the threatening clouds finally delivered a serious downpour. While the rest of us huddled under the most secure shelter we could find, this little girl scampered merrily from one overflowing awning to another, shrieking in delight as water cascaded onto her head, thoroughly entertaining her more-inhibited watchers.
The downpour stopped as suddenly as it started, so we went and treated ourselves to Fish Amok cooked in a banana leaf basket, which went down very well with the local beer.
