Day 1 #5: Uluru sunset

9th June 2012
Sunset is a major tourist industry at Uluru, and very well organised.  There are several designated viewing spots with carparks, and we went to one which was for buses only.
The tradition – for tour groups anyway – is to view the sunset over nibbles and sparkling wine.  When we arrived, I was amazed to see a whole lot of groups already set up with tables and chairs, nibbling their nibbles and drinking their drinks.  My first thought was how would it be possible to take romantic shots of the rock with all these people here?

You can see that the people go right around the corner to the right.

As we hurried in and set up our table, more and more buses kept arriving.  However, I needn’t have worried – there was room for us all to be set up in a long line, so everyone could have a good view.

Here’s to Uluru!
There were still a few photographic challenges.  Most of the following pictures were taken with a glass of sparkling wine in one hand – consequently some had to be straightened!  Because the sun was behind us, there were long shadows to dodge – other people’s and my own as well.  There was a fence near us, and a road, with posts beside it and of course cars on it, between us and the rock.
I have been recording the times of pictures taken of the rock, to see if I can observe any correlation between time of day and colour of rock.  However, the different lighting situations of each individual shot probably means that there will be no correlation whatsoever.  However, I have started this so will keep going.

So here are my “rock shots”.  The posts beside the road are particularly annoying, and I will photoshop them out for any serious pictures, but here they all are, warts, posts etc and all.

The biggest difference of course was when the sun went down and there was no more sunlight on the rock.  However, some beautiful colours came into the sky then, so I just kept on snapping…..
There was also the added challenge in that cars coming along the road now had their lights on.  You had to line up a shot then hold it until the cars passed or went behind one of the larger bushes.

After that life-changing experience, we hopped on the bus and went back to camp, where Megan had set up a welcoming dinner for us.

For a Central Australian experience, dinner included kangaroo steaks and camel sausages.
What a day!
