Pat and I have known Amy for all her life. Amy’s Mum (my good friend Judy) and I were pregnant together when Judy had Amy and I had Paul three weeks later.
After an international tennis career, Amy is now working as a development officer for emerging tennis players in Northern California. Pat and I went over to Berkeley to catch up with her.
The University of California – Berkeley opened its door to students in 1873.
The Berkeley Campanile, officially named Sather Tower, is modelled on St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. At the top is a carillon of 61 bells, “ranging from the size of a cereal bowl to that of a Volkswagen” (Lonely Planet).
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to witness this spectacular sight ourselves as the tower was being modified to make it accessible to wheelchairs.

Parking is at a bit of a premium in the university grounds. You have to be pretty special to be even considered for a parking space.
Amy took us to the university Tennis Centre where her friend Jana was playing. Beside the courts is a poster of Amy and her doubles partner – Amy won the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association) doubles championship three years in a row. And this year, Jana won the women’s singles title.

Laura drove over to Berkeley after work, and we all had dinner together. Great to catch up with you again Amy!
