“Shànghǎi is real China, but perhaps just not the real China you had in mind” (Lonely Planet).
Our first impressions of Shànghǎi blew away all of our expectations.
It was more modern than our previous idea of modern, slick and efficient, but also friendly and beautiful. The parts of it we saw in our first few days had either been completely renovated or else demolished and rebuilt in the last 15 years.
