As we were leaving for Damascus the next morning, Dan took us to dinner to “Jewel Damascus” to give us a “taste” of Syria. None of the staff had much English, but they’d made a great attempt with the menu, which gave us great delight. Some of our favourites were:
· Western dishes – Gordon Blue
· Spaghety Polonaise
· Buff pastry with cream
· Motton mince meet
· Chef Sandwish
· Lamp Chlop – five piece from lamp rips
· Pizza – Fonky
However, there is no way I could ever attempt to write a menu in Arabic. I admire how everyone here can speak some English – those of us who speak English only are missing out on so much.
After some hand signs and much laughter, we all ordered a half chicken of various kinds. It came flattened between two pieces of Lebanese (?) bread like a sandwich, and was seriously delicious. We were also given a dish of unusual vegetables and a plate of “garlic sauce”, which had a very fine, light texture, and to which I am now addicted for life. I tried to find out what was in it besides garlic, but we couldn’t get any further than “garlic sauce”. However, they seemed very pleased that I liked it, and gave me an extra dish of it to take home (can’t say that’s ever happened to me in Australia).
Next morning’s breakfast was a feast of lychees, Lebanese bread and garlic sauce.
