Lanarch Castle, NZ’s only castle, was built by banker William Lanarch for his beloved first wife Eliza Jane Guise. Construction began in 1871, with 200 workmen labouring for three years before the family moved in, with work continuing for a further 12 years.
Lanarch lived in the castle with three successive wives until 1898 when he took his own life in NZ’s House of Parliament.
The property changed hands several times and was twice abandoned.
In 1967, the property was bought by the Barker family who have made it their life’s work to restore the building and develop the gardens.
