Ilona's Dad Phil and his partner Lynn have been living in Crete for the last seven years, and I was going to visit them. Since February, Roy and Ilona have been planning a surprise visit to them for Phil's 70th birthday, on 29th September. So while Phil was expecting me to arrive, it was a big surprise for him when Ilona and Alexis arrived on the same flight.
Lynn, Phil, Ilona and Alexis at the airport.
We flew into Crete to the airport at Chania, pronounced something like Hanya. The flight staff seemed unsure of its pronunciation, or perhaps of where we were going, as there was always a pause before they said it, (with some uncertainty) e.g. "Welcome to our flight to ...... Chania?" The Captain got around it by saying, when we landed, "Welcome to ..... Greece."
Perhaps they were trying to read it from its Greek spelling which is Χανιά.
Phil was certainly surprised. The next part of the surprise was to happen the following night, when Roy was planning to arrive from London at Phil's birthday dinner.
We had lunch at a taverna right on the beach. The sea is so blue!
The food was pretty good too.
At Phil and Lynn's.

Lynn made a delicious roast vegetable dish for dinner.
